What is ASTERISK?
ASTERISK is a study trying to understand what makes it hard for people with alcohol use disorder (AUD) to get treatment and what kinds of treatment they prefer. Our team has already conducted dozens of interviews to help create a survey that will explore these treatment choices. This survey, called a Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE), will show people hypothetical treatment options with different costs, types, and lengths. We plan to enroll 250 adults, age 18 or older, who live in the SF Bay Area and drink alcohol.
What will happen if I participate?
First, you will have a phone screening to see if you’re eligible. If you are eligible, you will be given access to the Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) survey online through your web browser. After completing the survey, you will receive compensation for your participation.
Will I be paid for taking this survey?
Yes! Once you finish the survey, you'll be directed to a separate website where you can receive a $50.00 gift card through Tango. This platform lets you choose from hundreds of stores or select a prepaid Visa card.
How long will the survey take?
The length of the survey will depend on the person completing it- though we are estimating about 30-45 minutes of your time.
Do I need to be in alcohol treatment to participate?
No, you do not need to be currently in treatment to take part in the study. We are looking for people with a range of experiences, whether or not they have ever received treatment for alcohol or substance use.
Is my information confidential?
Yes, all responses are confidential and anonymous. Your personal information will not be shared, and results will only be used for research purposes.
Can I take the survey on my phone or tablet?
Yes! The survey can be completed on a computer, tablet, or smartphone using a web browser.
What if I start the survey but don’t finish it?
To receive payment, you must complete the full survey. If you exit before finishing, you may need to start over.
Where can I get more information?
